The Canal Street Ferry
Over 1.8 million passengers travel on the Algiers ferry each year. In fact, this ferry route has been in existence since 1827, even transporting train cars from the east side of the Mississippi River to the west. Only the Staten Island Ferry in New York Harbor with the Statute of Liberty is more iconic.
Algerines who take the ferry to the Central Business District (CBD), the French Quarter, Marigny, Lower Garden District, etc., can save 13 miles round trip as compared to driving the bridge. If they walk or bike, they save on parking, gasoline, and wear-and-tear on the car.
